End of the Nine Weeks
Wow, its hard to believe we are at the end of the first nine weeks already. I can't believe it. Time flies when you are having fun! :) We are rolling right along in the art room. Fifth grade is putting the finishing touches on their clay mugs. I will post some pictures in a few weeks after they are glazed and finished. The fourth grade is working on a "phases of the moon" project that correlates with their classroom studies. Second grade is working on Native American shields, also correlating with the classroom. We did a little sewing on them this past week. We will be adding beads and feathers this week. Kindergarten made clay pinch pots last week. Third grade is working on a drawing, emphasizing the skill of overlapping. First grade made origami owls emphasizing art motor skills. I'll post photos of some of the projects later in the week. Hope you are enjoying the blog!

Spider/Web
A few of the kindergarten classes painted spider webs this week. One class had time to also construct three dimensional spiders. We used Crayola model magic. They were adorable... wish we wouldn't have used the white pipe cleaners though. It makes it tough to see on the web.
FYI: If you click on any of the photos you will get a larger image.
Line
Okay, its been a little while since I updated. The fifth grade clay projects are coming along great. I can't wait to post some photos of the finished mugs. This week first grade was doing a line project. The objective was to utilize many varieties of lines. Many of the students decided to put their lines on a pumpkin because of the time of year. I've posted a few of the students line projects.

Owl Moon
Wednesday, October 8, 2008
Greetings,
Hello there,
It definitely feels like fall has arrived. Its chilly this evening. We are doing many fall projects in art this week. The fourth grade is doing positive/negative space leaves. They look great. I'll post a few examples on here sometime real soon. Feel free to make a comment when you visit the blog. I'd love to know that people are actually checking it out. I was excited to see there's a follower now. I think if you sign up for that you will be notified every time the blog is updated. I am reading the book Owl Moon to the first grade and we are making some beautiful owls. They won't be finished until next week....
Well, I'm going to go get a cup a tea..... see you later...

Trees
Update
Hello there,
I didn't get a chance to update last week. Sorry about that..... Fifth grade started their clay mug project. Usually fifth grade does clay at the end of the school year, but the last couple years we have been scrambling to find the time between SOL tests to get finished. I thought we'd do it early so that we had plenty of time. Thanks to all those of you who sent in gallon size zip-loc bags. We use them to store our clay from week to week so that it doesn't dry out. With only 45 minutes of art a week, it takes many weeks to complete the project. Cleanup takes many of our minutes also. The kids love clay, each grade does a different project, but everyone does get to make something out of clay.
The other grades are working on various fall projects. I have some really nice photos of first grades fall trees. I'll try to get a few of those on for you to look at later this evening.
Check back often, and please leave a comment or two so I know you found the page...

Update
Greetings from the art room,
The filter at school blocks this site so I have to update from home. I may not get to update as much as I had hoped to. I wanted to post a few more examples of the students artwork for the magnets. Fourth grade used their hands as the beginning of great designs. I think they are coming out really nice!

Update
Hello there,
It's been a really good week. We are still working on our magnet designs. We are using basic design principals as well as meeting some of the Virginia Standards of Learning in Art. The children will be making a few different designs, sending their favorite in to become a magnet. Some of the older children are working so hard and putting great details into their designs. They may only have one ready. I will post a few photos of third grade self-portraits. I thought they did a really nice job on these....
Have a great week,
Ms. Mellott

In the swing of things....
Greetings,
It's week two and we are all getting back into our routine. Everyone enjoyed the long weekend. All the classes except for kindergarten are working on designs for the "Square 1" magnets. The children are doing a super job. Kindergarten will be doing self portraits. This is our first attempt at tracing and cutting. I was VERY impressed with the class I had yesterday. As we finish the self portraits I will be hanging them out in the hallway. I will also post a photo of one or two on here. Check back, I'll be updating whenever I get a chance.

First Week of School
The first week of school has been very busy. It's been great seeing everyone. I can't believe how much the children grow over the summer.... Everyone has been very excited this week. Art class this week basically consists of getting seats, getting to know each other (new students to Livingston) going over rules and grading and then a short drawing project. We will get going with projects next week. PTO is doing the Square 1 fundraiser again. They plan on doing it early in the year so things could be ordered for Christmas. We will be doing the artwork for this in class.
The children drew things that made them smile over the summer... I just had to share this one....

Getting Ready.....
Greetings,
I hope you have had a WONDERFUL summer! I've been out to school a few days getting things ready for the upcoming school year. I'm excited about going back! I thought it might be fun to try an art blog this year. I thought it would be a great way to share what is going on in the art room. I have plans to update it often ..... we'll see how that goes once it gets busy..... I'll try!!!
The students at Livingston do beautiful artwork. I think it would be really nice to share it. I try to display it in the halls at school, but not everyone gets a chance to see it there. Enjoy your last few days of summer vacation..... see you soon!
